What Calcium Folinate Tablets are and what they are used for

Calcium Folinate is a vitamin from the B group.

This medicinal product is presented in a bottle. Each bottle contains 10 tablets.

Calcium Folinate is used:

  • to reduce the harmful effects and treat overdose of certain types of anti-cancer medicines e.g. methotrexate

  • to treat a certain type of anaemia (where red blood cells are decreased in number but increased in size) which results from low levels of folic acid. This type of anaemia may occur in pregnancy, infancy, liver disease, malabsorption syndromes and inadequate food intake.

Before Calcium Folinate Tablets are taken

Calcium Folinate Tablets should not be taken:

  • if you suffer from a particular type of anaemia caused by too little of the vitamin B12

  • if you have shown signs of hypersensitivity (allergy) to calcium folinate or the other ingredients on previous occasions

  • These tablets contain lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product

  • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Tell your doctor if:

  • you are taking, or have recently taken any medicines (including ones that are not prescribed for you) including;

    • methotrexate - a medicine used in the treatment of cancer and certain disorders where depression of the immune system is required (Calcium Folinate will not be given at the same time as this medicine, as it may stop it from working properly. It will be given 12-24 hours afterwards).
    • 5-fluorouracil - a medicine used in the treatment of cancer
    • medicines used for treating epilepsy e.g. phenobarbitone, phenytoin or primidone

How Calcium Folinate Tablets are used

The dose of medicine given to you will depend on your medical condition and the dose of Methotrexate you have been given.

When used to reduce the effects of other anticancer medicines the typical dose is one tablet every six hours. When used to treat anaemia the typical dose is one tablet per day.

Always take Calcium Folinate exactly as your doctor has instructed you. You should always check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water.

Your doctor may also ask you to drink more than usual.

If you have the impression that the effect of Calcium Folinate is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have taken more Calcium Folinate Tablets than you should, or if someone else takes any of your tablets, talk to a doctor or pharmacist immediately.

If you forget to take Calcium Folinate Tablets do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten individual doses.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Calcium Folinate can have side effects.

If the following happens, tell your doctor immediately:

  • severe allergic reaction - you may experience a sudden itchy rash (hives), swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth or throat (which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing), and you may feel you are going to faint.

These are very serious side effects. You may need urgent medical attention. All of these very serious side effects are rare.

Other side effects that have occurred rarely are fever (after calcium folinate has been given by injection) and convulsions (fits). If you experience any of these side effects, see your doctor as soon as possible.
